Style: Barrel Aged American Wild Sour Ale
“Experimentation. Ales and lagers that defy styles or categories. This is what we are about: our driving force, our passion. To further facilitate this innovative spirit, we’ve developed our Barrel-Aged Series where anything, and we mean ANYTHING, goes! Brewed for those as adventurous as we are!
A zymurgical ode to one of the classic – and one of our favorite – cocktails. Fancy a guess?”
In continuing my Avery Brewing Barrel-Aged Series with 3 out of 4, we hit Avery Brewing No. 27 Insula Multos Collibus, a sour aged in bourbon barrels with cherries. The beer comes in at 9.7% ABV and it is like a Manhattan in a bottle of beer. The beer is aged for 9 months to soak up all that bourbon and oak flavor and allow the barrels to take center stage.
The beer pours a dark brownish red in color with about a half inch of cream colored head that quickly recedes leaving a nice lacing around the glass. The scent gives off funky sour flavor with the cherries, vanilla, bourbon and oak all shining through. The flavor profile is very tart from the cherries and very malto forward, with the vanilla, bourbon and oak all coming through on a smooth finish. The body is light with moderate carbonation allowing the beer to go down dry and oaky.
Overall the beer is a great balanced sour. I do wish the bourbon flavor came through a little bit more than the alcohol does with the 9 month of aging period. Like the rest in the series, it is a limited release with 1308 cases, which increases the cost. I love bourbon, so for this reason I wish it was showcased a little more, but it is still present, so if you hate whiskey, you may not like the flavor profile. That being said if you do like whiskey and sours you will probably love this skillfully made and balanced sour. Definitely recommended.
